Fancy: Mercat A La Planxa @ The Renaissance Blackstone Hotel. Very good Tapas restaurant.

Fancy: Gene & Georgetti Italian Steakhouse. Huge portions, huger old school mafioso presence.

Non-Fancy: McDonald’s. Try the Double Quarter Pounder. Just prepare for the person taking your order to give you the stank eye when you ask for a Diet Coke.

Non-Fancy: Billy Goat Tavern. They have “cheeseborger cheeseborger cheeseborger” galore. Also source of the Cub’s “Curse of the Billy Goat”.

2. Pequod’s

3. everything else

The only Chicago deep dish you should ever eat is Lou Malnati’s. Everything else is like a cruel joke.

Also, Portillo’s is the local burger joint.

Ricobene’s on 26th. Gene and Jude’s. Johnnies on North Ave. in Elmwood Park (get the beef and sausage combo and an Italian ice). Green Mill or the Whistler for cocktails. Also, try Eataly for all things Italian. I hate Lou Malnati’s. Try Uno (or Due down the street), or Giordano’s instead. Billy Goat Tavern is an overrated tourist trap.

As for fancy, Rosebud, Gibson’s and Wildfire. Wildfire is sorta kinda a chain since there are multiples and they’re part of the Lettuce Entertain You group, but you would never guess it.

But if by fancy you mean food that looks too pretty to touch, won’t fill you up, and will cost more for one person than one week of groceries for a family of four, go to Alinea.

Most importantly, let me know when you’re in town and I’ll let you know what cruise nights are going on.

Hey Matt, is there anyway you guys can give a public explanation on the main page of Jalopnik for the divorce between Jalop and Oppo? I think we understand why, but it might be the honorable thing to do, if you guys are not already working on something. We’d all like to know what’s going to happen from here on out, will oppo articles ever make it to the main page of jalop, are you guys just upset with all of us, etc.

So,

Portillos; not fancy, but get a hotdog; a combo dipped and some cheese fries then have a chocolate cake shake.

Jean and Jude’s is a good hotdog joint and it’s really cheap.

Luminaties is a good pizza place and they make a great deep dish.
